Every day, teachers make hundreds of professional decisions.

By- Grégory Charles, Instructor, Little Star, Japan

They decide how to explain a difficult concept, respond to unexpected questions, adapt lessons for different learners, encourage participation, and support students facing challenges both inside and outside the classroom. These decisions shape learning, yet they are often based on experience, reflection, and professional judgement that remain undocumented and are gradually lost over time.

This observation became the starting point for my work. Throughout my teaching career in Japan, I have taught learners ranging from nursery children to adults, including corporate professionals and members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Across these diverse learning environments, I repeatedly observed that effective teaching rarely begins with the lesson itself. It begins with understanding the learner.

Different students may struggle for entirely different reasons. Some require a different explanation. Others need greater confidence, more time, or simply a learning experience that connects with something they already understand. These experiences gradually shaped my educational philosophy and led me to ask a fundamental question:

How can teachers make better educational decisions while preserving the professional knowledge they develop throughout their careers?

This question became the foundation of the Educational Decision Support System (EDSS).

The Educational Decision Support System is not intended to replace teachers or automate education. Instead, it has been designed as a professional support platform that assists teachers before, during, and after every lesson. By combining lesson planning, classroom reflection, educational resources, structured knowledge, and Artificial Intelligence, the system aims to transform everyday teaching experiences into evidence that supports future educational decision-making.

Central to this vision is the belief that Artificial Intelligence should strengthen teachers rather than replace them. Throughout this portfolio, AI is presented not as an autonomous educator but as a professional collaborator that expands possibilities while leaving every educational decision in the hands of the teacher. Technology can organise information, identify patterns, and reduce administrative workload, but it cannot replace empathy, professional judgement, or the relationships that define meaningful learning.

The Educational Decision Support System is only one part of a broader educational vision. Alongside its development, I have been documenting the philosophy, classroom experiences, interdisciplinary learning, and research that have emerged throughout this journey in what has become the Chalk to AI Framework. This framework seeks to capture not only how Artificial Intelligence can support education, but also why thoughtful educational decision-making, reflective practice, and human-centred teaching remain essential in an increasingly digital world.

Throughout this portfolio, classroom practice serves as the foundation for every idea presented. The Educational Decision Support System, the Chalk to AI Framework, and the educational resources described here have all emerged through continuous observation, experimentation, reflection, and refinement within authentic teaching environments. Rather than beginning with technology and searching for educational applications, this work began with educational challenges and explored how technology might help address them.

Ultimately, my vision extends beyond developing educational software.

I hope to contribute to an educational ecosystem where professional knowledge is preserved rather than forgotten, where teachers learn from both their own experiences and those of others, and where Artificial Intelligence supports reflective practice without diminishing the central role of the educator.

Because the future of education will not be defined by Artificial Intelligence alone.

It will be defined by teachers who know how to use it wisely.
